Overcoming life's shadows with light

I remember my dog used to bark at her shadow. She’d run around the yard trying to escape from it, but as we all know it isn’t possible. I remember being fascinated at trying to step on my shadow when I was young. I reflected on the idea of a shadow, and like objects and people I can create my own shadow by standing in front of the light. Essentially, I become a barrier to light.

There are times in life where we are the person in the way of our own potential. Our doubts, fears, and thought process are what gives hindrance in moving forward. You become your worst enemy, your worst critic, your worst judge. Living in the light requires a change of position.

I want the light to shine through, I don’t want to prevent anyone from moving forward in life, I don’t want to be the hindrance for myself or anyone else.

The cool thing is, we can create light.

We can focus on the light, instead of focusing on the shadow. I had a conversation with a friend as she had took some time on vacation. She was physically away from work, but her mind wouldn’t stop releeing about her job. The had taken a break from the office, but not a mental vacation. In a sense, she was still at work and that was preventing her from enjoying the full capacity of her vacation.

The reason I say this is because, our mind gets in the way of fullness. Fullness of life, fullness of light.

Changing my mind can’t happen overnight, seeking the light won’t be an easy task.

If God is considered light, than he is the ticket that is going to light up my personal life, and light to the world. Then the key for me in moving forward in life, beyond myself is God. There is bravery in overcoming. Overcoming your internal shadows, the barriers of light that are fearing within you. These internal shadows could be worry, fear, doubt, guilt, shame, insecurity. These are the shadows that keep you from moving forward.

I believe we are all meant to do something with our time on earth. I believe that we all have shadows to overcome- but we all were given these shadows in order to seek the light. We are given challenges in order to conquer them. We all have hindrances, and all have pain. We all have an internal battle waging war- desperately seeking for truth, hope, purpose, and light.

Once we tap into the light. We can do things we never could have imagined with our time on earth. But that light is not self-generated, because my light isn’t that big.

1 John 5:15 (MSG)

God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.

“there is a city that waits for us, time to take all the lampshades off”

John 8:12 (MSG)

..... “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”

So, be brave. Begin to move forward. You’ve got a song in you that’s bigger than the shadow that is consuming you. You’ve got something bigger to share in the world, and like an open book the world needs your light.

Psalm 27:1 (MSG)

Light, space, zest— that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.

Fight for the light.
